About the Role
The optical engineering intern will contribute to multiple projects ranging from product design, production support, and R&D. An ideal candidate has a desire for a dynamic workload ranging from computer-based design and simulation to hands-on & projects in an optics lab. This role requires strong communication skills and a positive attitude, working with several interdisciplinary teams. This role provides excellent opportunities for the intern to develop skills in optical engineering, hands-on lab skills, technical writing & communications, and data analysis. Candidates with interest in both academic and industry positions will find the experience and skill development valuable.
Qualifications
This role is for a college student pursuing an engineering/science bachelors such as physics/engineering physics, electrical engineering, or other majors with exposure to optics and/or electromagnetic physics. Students preparing to enter their junior or senior years, students looking for experience between their undergraduate and graduate degrees, or masters students are preferred. An ideal candidate will also have some experience with Zemax Optic Studio. Skills that are desired/will be developed in this role include:
Optical system design
Zemax Optic Studio
Data analysis in Python
Technical communication skills (writing, presenting, & discussion with peers)
Lab experience, especially optics lab experience
Knowledge of laser safety procedures
Strong troubleshooting and problem solving skills
Interest in spaceborne communications
Ability to take initiative and suggest new projects and tasks
Timing and Compensation
This is a 10 week paid internship, with start and end dates flexible depending on school & individual schedules. This role is fully on-site though occasional remote work may be considered with approval for specific circumstances. All interns must be legally authorized to work in the United States, and must complete standard employment paperwork including but not limited to an I-9 and W-4. Skyloom will complete any
necessary paperwork if academic credit for the internship is offered by the student’s educational institution.
Expected working hours are 20 hours per week, but may go up to 35 hours per week depending on availability.
Compensation will be $20-$25 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience.
Evaluation and Mentorship
The intern will receive regular feedback on their performance, as well as mentorship for professional development. A mid-program evaluation will assess progress and adjust goals as needed, with a final evaluation at the end of the program. The intern will have opportunities to provide feedback on their experience as well. A certificate of completion will be provided at the end of the internship, and letters of recommendation will be provided by the supervisor at the request of the intern. Completion of the program does not guarantee future paid opportunities, though outstanding interns will be considered for future opportunities as they become available.
